Understanding Hypnotism And It's Unknown Dangers

Hypnosis is being used widely all around the world with varying results. Undoubtedly Hypnosis does produce results. But, is it safe and a recommended means of solving problems?  First of all I we would like to point out the purpose of Esoteric teachings.

“Theosophy defends the lucidity of citizens and stimulates natural wisdom. Esoteric philosophy teaches self-knowledge and self-responsibility. From its point of view, it is a disastrous mistake to use chemical violence against the healthy working of the brain, or to artificially change human states of consciousness. “

– H.P Blavatsky
The Key to Theosophy

According to Esoteric Teachings, there are 49 levels of subconsciousness. This in total forms the Subconscious mind. The aim of Esoteric Teachings is awaken these 49 levels of subconsciousness and make one fully conscious. Now, if we look at Hypnosis, we observe two aspects of Hypnosis. Hypnosis has two elements. First, Hypnosis requires the recipient to be in a trance state that would permit the suggestion to enter the subconscious mind. Second element is the suggestion itself that brings out the change by influencing the subconscious mind.

According to Esoteric Teachings, hypnosis is a system of suppression. One suggestion is used to impress upon the subconscious mind against another way of behavior/habit/ailment. This does not always deal with the problem in it’s roots. It only suppresses one impression with a stronger suggestion. The ailment or problem sometimes gets healed and sometimes it comes back in a different form.

“Hypnotic suggestion may cure (disease) forever, and it may not. All depends on the degree of magnetic relations between the operator and the patient. If Karmic, they will be only postponed, and return in some other form, not necessarily of disease, but as a punitive evil of another sort. It is always “right” to try and alleviate suffering whenever we can, and to do our best for it. Because a man justly suffers imprisonment, and catches cold in his damp cell, is it a reason why the prison doctor should not try to cure him of it?”

— H.P Blavatsky; C.W. XII, p. 394-403

The downsides of Hypnotism although not many in number, are potent enough to obstruct spiritual progress. And they are as follows.

  • Hypnotism works around the mechanism of manipulating the subconscious mind. The purpose of Esoteric teachings is to make humanity more conscious. The purpose of Esoteric development is to make the subconscious mind conscious and not keep it below the threshold of consciousness.
  • Hypnotism works through the principle of a foreign suggestion that overpowers one’s will and helps one accomplish something which one was not able to do by oneself prior to the suggestion. It paralyses one’s will power and one is at the mercy of one’s subconscious mind. Esoteric teachings believe in accomplishing things and overcoming one’s obstacles with the power of one’s soul and through the unfoldement of striving.
  • Hypnotism uses the science of suppression. One subconscious suggestion is overpowered by another thus bringing about the desired results. According to Esoteric teachings this can cause confusions in one’s mind. For example using hypnosis to heal cigarette addiction can work. But, the addiction is never CURED. It is only overpowered by a more powerful suggestion. Once that suggestion dissolves after the physical death of the victim, he will find himself in the same state and will have to battle with addiction all over again.

One may confuse Hypnotism with affirmations but we must state they are not the same. Hypnosis is carried out in a trance state. Affirmations are affirmed consciously and thus they bring out the positive change with minimal hazards. Moreover, often times it happens while the patient is being hypnotized, unintended impressions can enter to the patient’s subconscious mind from the hypnotist causing problems. For example while hypnotizing a patient if the hypnotist thinks about an event of a bloody massacre, that thoughtform can enter the patient’s subconscious mind which is prone to any and all foreign impressions during the hypnotic session. This can create adverse problems. Moreover, Hypnotism can itself be dangerous for the Therapist.

“The hypnotist puts himself in serious danger by hypnotizing other people. The portion of his aura that is put into the aura of the other person will be contaminated by the defects of that person, and, when the person dies, the part of the aura that belongs to the hypnotist will come back and pollute the hypnotist as a possessing entity.

During the process of hypnosis, the hypnotist himself is open to hypnosis. The subject unconsciously projects back to the hypnotist the package of vices, thoughts, and emotions that are the target of the hypnotist. The hypnotist is not aware that he also is deeply influenced and hypnotized by the subject during the session.

I did some observations on hypnotists and discovered that their inner world was so complicated by projections that they either planned to commit suicide or continuously enacted the projections of those whom they hypnotized.

The effect of the projections from the subjects on the hypnotist does not necessarily surface immediately. The time element varies. It may take a week, a year, or a lifetime, but the hypnotist cannot escape the effect of the suggestions that he planted in the subjects, nor from the effects of the unintended projections of the subjects.

Nature has a principle that cannot be violated without suffering and pain. This principle can be expressed in many words, but, simply put, Nature does not tolerate interferences nor imposition. It encourages individual efforts for self-determination and self-realization. Nature encourages those who assist people to achieve health, happiness, success, enlightenment, and prosperity by their own efforts to the degree that their karma tolerates. Nature encourages people to save themselves by their own hands and feet and “be a refuge for themselves.”

Obviously and undoubtedly, we are not saying hypnotism is totally evil. But, at the same time we don’t have to say favourable things either because the aim of life is to become conscious and awaken from the slumber of conscious. Hypnotism that paralyses one’s will and makes one weak is not something we would ever recommend. A highly trained hypnotist may minimize all adverse effects and bring about a positive change in an individual. But, seldom one comes across a highly trained hypnotist who is also an adept thus safely practice hypnotism.

“The amateur Hypnotists of Science dig with their own hands the graves of many a man and woman’s intellect; they enslave and paralyze free will in their “subjects,” turn immortal men into soulless, irresponsible automata, and vivisect their souls with as much unconcern as they vivisect the bodies of rabbits and dogs.”

– H.P Blavatsky; C.W, P. 222 (Vol. XII)

The purpose of the spiritual path is awaken our consciousness and using a foreign influence to paralyse one’s will and be at mercy of the subconscious mind is retrogression and not spiritual progress. We must learn to disintegrate our weaknesses from our consciousness and not merely supress them with the help of artificial methods. Our weaknesses can be successfully disintegrated with the help of Kundalini energy, by comprehending and disintegrating egos with the help of Divine mother Kundalini, it can be disintegrated by chanting mantras and affirmations consciously, it can be disintegrated through the use of the Tibetan Blue Tetrahedron and also through Pranic Energy Healing. There are many methods of doing it.

“Self-hypnotism is as bad as an kind of hypnotism. I remember once shouting to a group of psychiatrists about this self-hypnosis concept. Stay awake. The whole life is hypnotizing you. When you watch television, you are being hypnotized. All advertisements are hypnotic. We want to awaken. Almost the entire humanity is “cattle.” There are a few so-called awakened people. Those who exploit others are hypnotized people.

For example, tomorrow a few doctors will gather and say, “There is a new illness.” Immediately, millions of people will rush to the hospitals and certain people will make billions of dollars. We have become hypnotized cattle. The headlines in newspapers, radio, and television can say anything they want. No one objects or questions them. We have become cattle, nothing else! The prime duty of leadership is to awaken people, instead of keeping you ignorant and using you.”
