The Right use of the Great Invocation

The Great Invocation is an Universal Mantram translated into over 80 languages and dialects. It was given by the Hierarchy via Holy Master D.K to Alice Bailey in April 1945. Today the Great Invocation is practiced by various spiritual and occult groups and organizations all over the world. Just like many great prayers like the Gayatri Mantra or the Lord’s prayer got distorted over time. Just like they were turned into mere mechanical repetition of words. Today we see the same plight befall the Great Invocation which is the invocation for the New Age.

Mantrams lose their power  and potency due to many reasons. First, when they are turned into soulless mechanical repetition of mere unrhythmic words. “These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.” – Matthew 15:8 (HCSB)

Secondly Mantrams and sacred verses lose their potency when the words are altered thereby altering the inner meaning and geometry of the prayer/mantram. This is simply because when very powerful mantrams are revealed to the world by Great Initiates, the words that are used to create the mantram carry power within them. Altering the words therefore distorts the mantram. It is therefore necessary for disciples to use the original version of a mantrams or sacred prayers whenever possible.

“Mantrams are like chemical or geometrical formulas; changing one word gives the mantram an entirely different result, or makes it misleading, dangerous, or useless. Mantrams are transmitters of energy. When the transmitter is not constructed in a particular order, the energies can be destructive or negative, creating confusion and chaos in the subtle planes of human endeavor. Many mental disorders are the result of a misuse of prayers, mantrams, and chanting. Let us not forget that the Hierarchy uses the Great Invocation in its original form every day.

Those who, with good intentions, want to change the Great Invocation, would do better to create a totally different invocation of their own — instead of distorting a masterpiece with their unskilled brush. The most important and powerful line of the Great Invocation is: May Christ return to Earth.Curiously enough, it is this line which is under attack. By changing this formula, the Great Invocation no longer exists. This is what the distorters want.”

— Torkom Saraydarian, Triangles of Fire

The word Christ in the Great Invocation doesn’t refer to a religious figure from Christianity. The Christ it’s referring to is the universal Christ or Christos or the anointed one who’s beyond religion. Great beings and avatars are always beyond religion because they stand for one Humanity. Those who for religious reasons refrain from using the word “Christ” in the Great Invocation must learn to go beyond their religious calcifications and embrace the universal religion that accepts all religion knows as Theosophy. To expect the Great Invocation to change or bow to us in order to fit itself to our whims and conditionings, is a form of egotism. Instead, we must be the ones who should change so that we are able to become the recipients of the light coming from the Hierarchy while practicing the Great Invocation.

“Some people like the Great Invocation because of its vision and power, but they do not like to use the word “Christ.” They give themselves permission to change the Great Invocation, which was not originated by them. Changing or deleting the Name of Christ eliminates the focus of the energies. It can even be harmful to those who use the Great Invocation for their personal or group advantages.” – Torkom Saraydarian

Before a practitioner uses the Great Invocation it is absolutely important to understand the impulse that is present behind such a powerful Esoteric mantram. People have started using the Great Invocation for personal purposes and selfish reasons. The true purpose of the GI is however not a self-seeking form of prayer but altruism and self-lessness. When these two elements are removed from the Great Invocation it’s no longer the same mantram.

“The Great Invocation or Prayer does not belong to any person or group but to all Humanity. The beauty and the strength of this Invocation lies in its simplicity, and in its expression of certain central truths which all men, innately and normally, accept the truth of the existence of a basic Intelligence to Whom we vaguely give the name of God; the truth that behind all outer seeming, the motivating power of the universe is Love;…

…..the truth that a great Individuality came to earth, called by Christians, the Christ, and embodied that love so that we could understand; the truth that both love and intelligence are effects of what is called the Will of God; and finally the self-evident truth that only through humanity itself can the Divine Plan work out.”

— Alice Bailey, Discipleship in the New Age, Volume II

From the words of Alice Bailey it’s evident that the Great Invocation is an Universal Mantram that must always be used to bless all humanity. So, under no circumstances should a practitioner use this Mantram to bless a particular country, city, place, job, people, or pervert it in any manner to manifest material things in one’s life. Practitioners who misuse the Great Invocation will surely have a heavy karma to pay for any misuse or abuse of the mantram. The Keynote of every Prayer given by the Hierarchy is “Not mine but Thy will be done.” Any prayer that originates from egotistical impulses that doesn’t carry the same unselfish note is a form of sorcery and carries an ahrimanic note in it. It is therefore paramount to not desecrate sacred mantrams by using them for selfish purposes. Otherwise it will amount to a form of black magic.

Through the right use of the Great Invocation we can align the three aspects of our nature Light, Love and Power and bring them together in a cosmic symphony. By rhythmic use of the Great invocation and by chanting it meditatively from the heart we can build bridges between the Spiritual hierarchy beyond and humanity. These are few of the Guidelines one can follow while practicing the Great Invocation:

“At the time we say the Great Invocation, we must proceed through the following steps:

— a moment of mental silence;

— a state of penetrative concentration on the meaning of the words

— the use of creative visualization.

Mental silence means detachment from former or new thoughts. Concentration is to focus on each word without letting the mind waver, penetrating into the deeper meanings of each word. Creative visualization is a process of handling energy and building communication lines to higher levels of being.”

— Torkom Saraydarian, Triangles of Fire

It must also be noted the Great Invocation should not be chanted more than Seven times during each session. It is not the number of times we chant the mantram that matters but the rhythm and intensity that bears results. Chanting the Great Invocation three times properly and rhythmically is far more potent than mindlessly and haphazardly chanting it 108 times. Every time we chant the Great Invocation we must use creative visualization. A meditative silence must ensue following the practice of Great Invocation. It is also important to declutter the mind and be still prior to the Great Invocation meditation so that thoughts don’t sabotage the rhythm of our chanting and visualization. The Great Invocation

From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ* return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men –
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

Om….. Om….. Om….

This Invocation, which I have lately given to you, is the group prayer of all humanity in the Aquarian Age; therefore it is essential that every disciple (aspiring to the service of humanity) should make its distribution as well as its daily use a major duty and obligation.
