IS GENERATIONAL HEALING A FACT OR FICTION?

These days a new form of healing is in vogue. It’s called Generational healing. This healing claims to heal problems created by ancestral ties. It claims to neutralize FAMILY KARMA. So, do we pay our ancestor’s karma? Let’s say our ancestors burned down an entire village, do we pay for their actions in this lifetime? There are verses in the Bible that says the sins of the father run through the next 3 or 4 generations. Is it really true that we are accountable for the sins of our ancestors? The Masters of Wisdom have taught Karma can be neutralized by learning the lessons. It is indisputable Karma can be changed. Karma definitely can be changed. But, can it be healed in spite of not learning the lessons through Generational Healing?

Many of these people who have created this new doctrine of Generational healing which was unheard of until recently fail to understand some of the basic Esoteric principles related to Heredity and Karma. Their mistakes and wrongful assertions which they defend arrogantly can be summed up to these few categories:

People who have invented Generational healing believe that characteristics/propensities/traits/karma are inherited from our ancestors thus generational healing is needed. It’s actually the other way round. We are born in families that have similar tendencies, character defects, similar problems, similar disease based on the law of attraction and also because we have similar karma like them. This is according to the proverb “Birds of a feather flock together.” The belief that heredity and karma is passed down from our ancestors would make all of us victims of the genes and karma of our Ancestors which we are not responsible directly. This would also indicate we don’t create Karma or Genes of our own but we pay the Karma and inherit the genes of other people who happen to be our ancestors. This would inevitable chain our souls to a PHYSICAL lineage of ancestors and family line who are born in the same place and same country, while it is for a fact a soul is not a body, that it incarnates in different families and nationalities in different lives. In other words every lifetime, we have a new family, therefore new ancestors! If one understands that one changes their family line in every lifetime, this theory of Generational healing becomes obsolete.

According to William Q. Judge, one of the founders of the Theosophical Movement:

“The whole difficulty arises from the inherited transmitted habit in the Western mind of looking at effects and mistaking them for causes, and of considering the instruments or means, through and by means of which laws of nature work, as causes. Heredity has been looked at, or is beginning to be, as the cause of crime and of virtue. It is not a cause, but only the means or instrument for the production of the effect, the cause being hidden deeper. It seems just as erroneous to call heredity a cause of either good or bad acts as it is to call the merely mortal brain or body the cause of mind or soul. …”

A belief that Karma and genes are inherited is an example of confusing causes with effects. Esoteric science is very clear about the fact that karma is never inherited from others. We create our own Karma through our actions, speech and thoughts. And that Karma is stored in our Permanent Atoms. Based on that karma we choose our family, body, genes etc etc.  It can be true, we may have karmic ties with other people. But an assertion that those things are passed down are completely false. We must here understand the esoteric implications of the proverb “Birds of a feather flock together.” This proverb is the key to understanding how people with similar traits are born in the same family.

This resonates with the fact that we are souls not bodies. A belief that Karma and genes are passed down from ancestors is confusing oneself with the body. As an example if in the past lives we have ourselves cultivated the art of singing, we are consequently born in a family of singers or a family which is highly creative. This is because our propensities and qualities we have ourselves cultivated are stored in our permanent atoms. Based on the recordings in our permanent atoms our physical body in our next life is chosen. It would take a very Evil God to make future generation of an ancestor pay for the Karma created by the ancestors. This kind of view belongs to the medieval age and not the Age of Aquarius.

According to Esoteric Science, a soul who has not cultivated a certain quality in the past will never be born in a family which genetically expresses that quality. And, even if it is born, it will not share the same ability with the rest of the family and that gene will be suppressed. This also explains how in certain family a child is born who is unlike rest of their family members. We need not go into scientific details here. This can be verified from a reliable book on Genetics. It is for a fact that sometimes there are two generations in a family showing a genetic defect of diabetes and one progeny from the third generation doesn’t show the same genetic defect. Why are the Karmas from the ancestors not passing on to progeny of the third generation who doesn’t share the same tendency?

Esoteric science says the soul chooses a body that reflects it’s proclivities in it. It is not the other way round that traits are passed down and the souls has to be responsible of consequences which it has not itself produced.

“In a family, then, where a great deal of music is performed, you will find good musical ears, and so when a soul with a strongly developed musical talent is to be incarnated, it will naturally not choose a family with no interest in music — where it would languish — but one which has suitable physical organs. This fits in very well with the law of karma.”
– Rudolf Steiner

Generational Healers also relate the problems in life to our ancestors. This is an example of  inaccurate perception regarding the ORIGIN of our karma/traits/problems etc. This is also a very convenient cop out of taking responsibility of one’s self created Karma by blaming it on ancestors/ family members etc. Our relationship with our ancestors are strictly effects and not causes. We are born in a certain family with certain souls because we are related to them by Karma. We exchange karma with them. We have created that karma and that Karma can only be worked out through learning the lessons and through mutual interactions with the people we are bound with. Unless we learn the lessons no outside influence can annihilate that karma. This has been explained many times by Maha Atma Choa Kok Sui. Yet despite the teachings being very concise, Generational healers are spreading misinterpretation and preying on the ignorance of people to conduct business with them.

“For instance, should a mother have weak eyes and her child also evidences weak eyes, it may not be that the child has inherited the weak eyes of its mother. This would mark gross injustice on the part of our creator. It would be more correct to assume that the child came into this present incarnation with the inherent weaknesses in it’s own physical form and through the workings of the blood, fell under the influence of its “ancestors”, which is to say, the influence of it’s own past bodies in past lives.”

– Astara Book of Life

Now one might ask what did the Bible mean when it said, “The sins of the ancestors run through the next four generations.” Reading this literally is the cause of all misunderstandings. Neophytes with very little Esoteric understanding would interpret the verses of the Bible blatantly in a Literal manner. According to Esoteric teachings as presented in the above quote, our past four generations are our past four incarnations. We are the FATHER of our own Karma. Every action we generate on all eight directions and on any level is FATHERED by us.

We are not the body. We are the Soul. So if we committed homicide, should the next four physical progeny of innocent souls who did not kill anybody and who happen to be our sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters pay the consequences of the Karma that we created by Killing someone? Would the universal Law of Karma which is the law of cause and effect, operate in this unfair manner?  According to the teachings obviously NOT! The teachings have repeatedly said we pay for our own karma and our present karma manifests in the next four incarnations as EFFECTS. We may have family karma but even in a family karma we only pay our individual debt which we created ourselves.  This has been stated by all Esoteric Teachings Multiple times, over and over again. But, Generational Healers have misinterpreted the Bible in a very superstitious way that has bred all these misunderstandings.

And, now if this is true what purpose does Generational healing serve in our lives? Can the Generational Healers explain to us how the mechanism of this new form of healing works? Moreover, Generational healers scan the Father’s line of ancestors and mother’s line of ancestors to trace the Karma. We were all incarnated in a different family and perhaps a different city and country in our past lives. So, surely the present family and it’s ancestors might have little to do in shaping what we are today. Torkom Saraydarian in his book Esoteric Healing has explained this very coherently that we build our Genes and we are responsible for our own Karma in contrast to the mistaken belief of Generational healers that these things are passed down through generations:

“I was reading in a medical book that the genes and DNA control the muscles, the glands, the behaviors, and the consciousness of people, but the doctors do not dare to question how these formations of genes came into being. How is it that you have cancer in your genes, or tuberculosis, and others do not? Is God really so unrighteous to create good genes in you and bad genes in them? Some doctors never dare to talk about these things because they are scared! Even if they know a little, they don’t want to discuss these things because it affects their income, and for some their income is more important than your health problems.

Your thinking, your emotions, your actions, your speech create those recordings in your permanent atoms that eventually produce your genes. It is YOU that builds your genes. No one else builds them. God is not so crazy as to sit there and prescribe genes for you. Your genes are made by your own hands, by your own thoughts, by your own mouth, by your solar plexus or heart. The way that you are living and acting and relating to people creates your genes. That is why whatever you are, you are! You created it.”

Esoteric Science of Healing

So we must say, people teaching Generational Healing are not acting in line with Esoteric Teachings. They are merely appealing to the superstitious masses who are desperately seeking for solutions and would avail any means of ending their misery without a second thought, be it at the cost of their own conscience. Generational Healers may offer services that cheat Karma, but we just want to remind everyone the words of H. P Blavatsky:

“The Lords of Karma, Mystically, these Divine Beings are connected with Karma, the Law of Retribution, for they are the Recorders or Annalists who impress on the (to us) invisible tablets of the Astral Light “the great picture-gallery of eternity” — a faithful record of every act, and even thought, of man, of all that was, is, or ever will be, in the phenomenal Universe. As said in “Isis,” (I:343), this divine and unseen canvas is the BOOK OF LIFE. . . . The Lipika . . . project into objectivity from the passive Universal Mind the ideal plan of the universe, upon which the “Builders” reconstruct the Kosmos after every Pralaya. . . .”
 – The Secret Doctrine D I:104

While the Generational Healers may try all their best to bypass the Law of Karma. All their attempts at bypassing and cheating the Law of Karma is also recorded by these ineffable divine beings known as “The Lords of Karma”. In an attempt to escape Karma, these Healers are generating new fresh Karma which they will have to answer in Future.
